PT// Este é um projeto é uma tentativa de intercâmbio com o artista David Bowie, que inclui fotografias e uma carta. É uma peça performativa sobre como assumir a identidade de outra pessoa através da partilha do seu microbioma intestinal através de um Transplante de Microbiota Fecal. Estas fotografias foram oferecidas a David Bowie, em troca de uma amostra de fezes. A oferta nunca foi completada – Bowie morreu em 2016. Este projeto procura pensar e investigar a transplantação fecal e biomas do intestino como uma forma de compreender a função das bactérias no nosso corpo. Aborda assim metáforas amorosas e de relacionamento interespécies, com a imunologia e as bactérias como as suas personagens principais. Ao ser diagnosticada com a doença de Crohn, o interesse de High pela microbiota intestinal começa pelo seu próprio corpo. Esta série de imagens faz parte de um corpo de obras chamado “You Are My Future” que explora o sistema imunitário como um sistema de autopoiesis, capaz de se auto manter.

EN// Attempted exchange project with David Bowie, that includes photography and a letter. It is a performative piece about taking on someone else’s identity through sharing their gut microbiome via a FMT. Photographs were offered to David Bowie in exchange for a poop sample. The offer was never completed as Bowie died in 2016. Looking at research in fecal microbial transplants and gut biomes to better understand the important function of bacteria in our bodies, this project embraces metaphors of interspecies love. As a patient with Crohn’s disease, High’s interest in gut microbiota starts with her own body. This series of images is part of a work called “You Are My Future” that explores the immune system as an autopoiesis system, capable of maintaining itself.

PT// Kathy High (EUA) é uma artista/educadora interdisciplinar que colabora com cientistas e ativistas, e considera sistemas vivos, sentimentos animais, e dilemas éticos da biotecnologia e das indústrias médicas. É professora de Vídeo e Novos Media no departamento de Artes no Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) em Troy, NY, e é directora do Laboratório BAT (BioArt and Technology) no Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies, no RPI. É uma apoiante da ciência comunitária do DIY e das práticas de arte ecológica. É Coordenadora de Projeto do Centro de Educação Ambiental Urbana do NATURE Lab com o Sanctuary for Independent Media, onde é membro da direção e co-fundadora. Está empenhada em abordagens queer e feministas para remodelar a investigação e a aprendizagem pela prática da biociência ecológica, e em ações de colaboração.
É galardoada com bolsas e prémios do National Endowment for the Arts, da Fundação Guggenheim e da Fundação Rockefeller. As suas obras de arte foram expostas na documenta 13 (Alemanha), Museu Guggenheim, Museum of Modern Art, (NYC), UCLA (Los Angeles), Science Gallery (Dublin), NGBK (Berlim), Festival Transitio_MX (México), MASS MoCA (North Adams), Galeria Para-site (Hong Kong), Galeria Esther Klein, University Science Center (Filadélfia), e Museu Médico (Copenhaga). EN// Kathy High (USA) is an interdisciplinary artist / educator who collaborates with scientists and activists, and considers living systems, animal sentience, and ethical dilemmas of biotechnology and medical industries. She is Professor of Video and New Media in the Arts department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY, and is director of the BAT (BioArt and Technology) Laboratory in RPI’s Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies. She is a supporter of community DIY science and ecological art practices. She is the Project Coordinator for the NATURE Lab Urban Environmental Education Center with The Sanctuary for Independent Media where she is a board member and co-founder. She is committed to queer and feminist approaches to reshaping ecological bio-science research and learning-by-doing, and to collaborative action.
Among many honors, she is the recipient of fellowships and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Guggenheim Foundation and Rockefeller Foundation.
