Brittle: Stress Mess propõe a criação de redes de realidade aumentada de rastreio de doenças auto-imunes invisíveis. O projecto inclui investigação imunológica sobre o próprio corpo de Kathy High, considerando os efeitos do stress no metabolismo celular e a escalada da doença. A partir desta investigação, High irá desenvolver paisagens sonoras e segmentos de realidade aumentada que provocam o stress interno.
High é uma artista interdisciplinar que trabalha com tecnologia, arte e biologia. A sua arte tem se concentrado na empatia e na doença. Ela produz fotografias, filmes, esculturas, e espectáculos com questões queer e feministas em áreas da biociência. Ela vive com múltiplas doenças auto-imunes invisíveis. Ela explora estas doenças e diferentes capacidades usando estética visual e sonora, estética dos cuidados, e biotecnologia/arte. Devido a um preconceito em relação à cultura visual, Brittle: Stress Mess procurará hackear a realidade aumentada e ir além do visual para incluir paisagens sonoras e experiências táteis.
O seu objectivo é criar trabalho interativo usando a realidade aumentada, e compreensão empática. Quando High testemunhou pela primeira vez imagens microscópicas das suas próprias células T imunitárias reagindo a materiais microbianos intestinais, foi assombroso: “Havia algo poético naquela imagem – permitindo uma nova forma de considerar a minha saúde e desassossego… A imagem parecia uma falha, estática no sistema – problemas que acontecem uma e outra vez – como alguma transformação… talvez eu não esteja a ‘atacar-me’ através da minha auto-imunidade, mas sobretudo sou um mutante, preparando-me para outra época… Esta imagem fez-me ver o meu biosistema com uma interpretação mais tolerante, situando mesmo a minha saúde doente como parte de um emaranhado ambiental mais amplo”.

Brittle: Stress Mess proposes to create augmented reality networks of care tracking invisible autoimmune disease stresses. The project includes immunological research on Kathy High’s own body considering the effects of stress on cellular metabolism and escalating disease. From this research, High will develop soundscapes and augmented reality segments riffing off internal stress.
High is an interdisciplinary artist working with technology, art and biology. Her art has focused on empathy and disease. She produces photographs, films, sculptures, and performances posing queer and feminist questions in areas of bioscience. She lives with multiple invisible autoimmune diseases. She explores these diseases and different abilities using visual and sound aesthetics, aesthetics of care, and biotech/art. Because of a bias towards visual culture, Brittle: Stress Mess will seek to hack augmented reality and push beyond the visual to include soundscapes and haptic experiences.
Her goal is to create interactive work using augmented reality, and empathic understanding. When High first witnessed microscopic images of her own immune T cells reacting to gut microbial materials, it was uncanny: “There was something poetic in that image– enabling a new way to consider my health and dis-ease… The image looked like a glitch, static in the system – trouble that happens over, and over again – like some transformation… perhaps I am not ‘attacking myself’ through my autoimmunity, but rather I am a mutant, preparing for another time …This image made me see my biosystem with a more tolerant interpretation, situating even my ill health as part of a broader environmental entanglement”.

PT// Kathy High (EUA) é uma artista/educadora interdisciplinar que colabora com cientistas e ativistas, e considera sistemas vivos, sentimentos animais, e dilemas éticos da biotecnologia e das indústrias médicas. É professora de Vídeo e Novos Media no departamento de Artes no Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) em Troy, NY, e é directora do Laboratório BAT (BioArt and Technology) no Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies, no RPI. É uma apoiante da ciência comunitária do DIY e das práticas de arte ecológica. É Coordenadora de Projeto do Centro de Educação Ambiental Urbana do NATURE Lab com o Sanctuary for Independent Media, onde é membro da direção e co-fundadora. Está empenhada em abordagens queer e feministas para remodelar a investigação e a aprendizagem pela prática da biociência ecológica, e em ações de colaboração.
É galardoada com bolsas e prémios do National Endowment for the Arts, da Fundação Guggenheim e da Fundação Rockefeller. EN// Kathy High (USA) is an interdisciplinary artist / educator who collaborates with scientists and activists, and considers living systems, animal sentience, and ethical dilemmas of biotechnology and medical industries. She is Professor of Video and New Media in the Arts department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY, and is director of the BAT (BioArt and Technology) Laboratory in RPI’s Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies. She is a supporter of community DIY science and ecological art practices. She is the Project Coordinator for the NATURE Lab Urban Environmental Education Center with The Sanctuary for Independent Media where she is a board member and co-founder. She is committed to queer and feminist approaches to reshaping ecological bio-science research and learning-by-doing, and to collaborative action.
Among many honors, she is the recipient of fellowships and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Guggenheim Foundation and Rockefeller Foundation.
